This year I have spent more time than ever looking for something unique. Whether it is a new variety of veggie seed I haven’t tried in the past, a new breed of chicken to grow for eggs, or a new way to grow fruit bushes, I have really tried to get outside of the “big box” mundane.
In my local area, I can fill my blueberry garden with hundreds of blueberry bushes with no problem. They would be one of 5 varieties and every neighbor of mine is growing the same plants. If that suits your desires, then go for it! After all, a blueberry is a blueberry! Right?
Well…I don’t think so! Part of the reason I personally spend all the time, money, and effort to grow my own food is so that I can have something unique that I can’t get in the grocery store. Within 10 mins of my house, I have 6 major brands of grocery stores and they all sell blueberries. If I just want to buy a pint of berries, I have that option in every direction. I want my gardens to be filled with beautiful and unique plants that are within my skill set to grow.
I found one such plant at Garden Goods Direct! Garden Goods Direct sent me The Bushel and Berry Blueberry Glaze plant. First of all, everyone knows about my love affair with Bushel and Berry. If you have missed it, you can read about it HERE! This was, however, my first experience with Garden Goods Direct. I was immediately impressed with their shipping speed and packaging. Aside from someone trying to destroy the box, there was no way something was going to happen to my plant en route to my house! It was tightly secured and packaged well. That is a big deal when you are ordering a live plant through the mail.
Secondly, the health of my plant was stellar! When it arrived the soil still had moisture and the branches and leaves were in great shape! The plant was full and strong. I was so excited to see this because I have ordered from places in the past and received plants that seemed to be on their way out of this world! This plant was ready to grow!
Due to some urgent things needing to be done on the farm, I was not able to plant this bush in its pot for nearly a week. I did keep it watered but it just sat in the shipping bucket. When I was finally able to get it transplanted, I noticed what seemed to be new growth. Maybe I am crazy, but there were several new, tender growths throughout the bush. If this little guy wants to grow that badly, I am excited to see what happens in the spring!
Time will tell if this plant provides a good yield, but with a boxwood style growth habit and being a big producer in a small package, this plant definitely filled my desire for a unique addition to the berry gardens!
The Garden Goods Direct website has a fine assortment of trees, plants, and a large selection of houseplants. They don’t have the largest selection of fruit-bearing items, but that doesn’t seem to be a huge focus for them. They do provide quite a bit of guidance and they have a resource center with some good topics included. All in all, I will be more than happy to order from Garden Goods Direct again and have already started a list of trees that they offer to add to my property!
I would definitely recommend them for your plant and tree buying needs especially with the gift-giving season upon us.
