Have you ever wondered whether you actually need a rooster in your backyard flock?

I’ll be honest — when I got my very first batch of baby chicks, I spent weeks hoping I wouldn’t end up with a rooster. I wanted eggs, peace, and quiet… not crowing at sunrise or unexpected flock drama.

Fast forward six years of raising chickens, and my perspective has shifted more than I ever expected.

While roosters aren’t right for every situation, I’ve learned that they can play an important role in a healthy, well-managed flock. From flock protection to breeding, behavior management, and even overall chicken dynamics, a good rooster can bring benefits that aren’t obvious when you’re just starting out.

If you’re on the fence — or trying to decide what to do with an unexpected roo — this article from Hoover Hatchery does a great job breaking down why you might actually want a rooster around, and when it makes sense to keep one.

Whether you’re new to chickens or reevaluating your flock setup, it’s worth taking a closer look before writing roosters off completely.

Role of the Rooster

If you’re thinking about raising chickens for the first time, or you’re already planning ahead for baby chicks in 2026, choosing a reliable hatchery makes all the difference.

One hatchery I’ve personally gone back to time and again is Hoover Hatchery. I’ve ordered from them multiple times over the years, and their birds have consistently been some of our favorites — healthy, well-started, and full of personality.

Whether you’re looking for good egg layers, hardy breeds, or something a little different for your flock, it’s worth taking the time to browse what they’re offering for the upcoming season. Planning early gives you the best selection and a smoother start when chick season rolls around.

If chickens are on your homestead wish list, Hoover Hatchery is definitely a place I’d recommend checking out as you explore your options.
